Despite repeated government directives to prevent mob attacks, 174 people have been killed in mob violence and public beatings across Bangladesh in the past 10 months, reports Samakal.
Data from Ain o Salish Kendra shows 83 of these deaths occurred in 2024 alone. The Human Rights Culture Foundation reported 86 deaths in 143 incidents in 2023. Even police are not spared—477 cases were filed over attacks on law enforcers.
Rights groups say such unchecked mob justice undermines the rule of law and human rights. Authorities, including the military, have warned of tough actions, but enforcement remains weak.
