Bangladesh Launches Probe into 2014, 2018, and 2024 Elections

The Bangladesh government has launched an unprecedented investigation into alleged irregularities during the 2014, 2018, and 2024 general elections, The Daily Star reports.

A gazette notification issued Thursday announced a committee to examine corruption and electoral misconduct, with recommendations due by September 30.

The probe comes amid longstanding accusations that all three elections were marred by unfair practices. Awami League won two-thirds majorities under PM Sheikh Hasina.

Reform Commission convener Badiul Alam Majumdar welcomed the move, calling it a historic step.

Observers say it’s the first time a Bangladeshi government has initiated such an inquiry into its own electoral conduct.
