NBR Locked Down as Revenue Staff Continue Protests

The National Board of Revenue (NBR) headquarters in Dhaka was locked down Thursday by security forces amid staff protests over recent reforms, reports Prothom Alo. Officers staged a pen-down strike demanding reversal of transfer orders and the resignation of the NBR chairman. Police and military restricted entry and exit, leaving some protesters trapped inside. The government had earlier split the NBR into two units to meet IMF loan conditions. World Bank economist Zahid Hussain warns that trade and economic lifelines are at risk. Talks are seen as the only path forward to resolve the escalating deadlock.

87,000 Retirement Benefit Applications Pending for MPO Teachers

Over 87,000 MPO-listed teachers and staff await retirement benefits, with some waiting 3–5 years, reports New Age. Many die before receiving entitlements. Under the scheme, employees contribute 10% of their salary toward pensions. Distribution resumed this April, benefiting 1,048 teachers so far. However, the Welfare Trust needs an additional Tk 3,700 crore to clear pending cases. Secretary Sharifa Nasreen says the current wait is about 2.5 years. Economist Wahiduddin Mahmud estimates Tk 7,000–8,000 crore has been misused in the pension fund, warning of a severe backlog. Calls for reform and transparent disbursement processes are growing louder.
